Resilience and voices that spark a dialogue.
Over the last 25 years in the United States, states have made dramatic changes to reform voting restrictions among disenfranchised people. Despite these actions, there still remain 5.2 million American people that are unable to vote due to their felony convictions. The roots of these laws are systemically racist, specifically targeting people of color, more specifically African Americans. The 13th Amendment enabled these consequences - if the state could convict black people of crimes, they could imprison them and strip them of their right to vote. Though this was passed during the 19th century, the effects still hold up in modern society.
Deprived Democracy focuses on sharing the stories of those who are disenfranchised to give back their voices and spread awareness on the issue. This form of voter suppression was designed around racial disparity which must be recognized and amended. This social campaign informs people in the United States of the unjustness of disenfranchisement that disproportionately affects people of color. The products and campaign of Democracy Deprived aim to frame their resilience around their words that will spark a dialogue around the issue.
